Tag pulled the trusty Jessop work Chevy up behind Cassâs blue Toyota, parked in the street in front of her house.
She lived in a music box-sized Victorian house perched on a hillock above the town on Black Hollow Avenue, just two blocks back from Main Street. He knew she had taken a lease on the house when she arrived in Peppermint Vale. Despite how rundown it was and in dire need of repairs to the electrical and plumbing systems, she had fallen in love with it and negotiated with her landlady to purchase it.
This was one of the things Tag had learned from her over dinner two nights ago during which her antagonistic attitude towards him and Lincoln had mellowed. That night, after eating the meal she had cooked for them, he and Lincoln had squabbled with good natured drunkenness about founding their law partnership.
âAlphabetically it should be Carragher and Jessop,â Lincoln had joked.
âIt has to be Jessop and Carragher because Iâm graduating before you and therefore I will be the more senior partner,â Tag rebutted. âHence I deserve the respect of being listed first on the letterhead.
âAh, but the name Carragher has more prestige. The Carraghers are linked with politics and the Jessops are associated with construction,â Lincoln pointed out.
âMore like destruction,â Cass had interrupted on a laugh.
âNo trading in on the Carragher family name and connections!â Tag booed, throwing a cushion towards Lincoln and catching Cass off guard, igniting a free for all pillow fight that had ended with the three of them in giggles on the floor.
Instead of leaping out the cab, Tag took a deep breath. He knew Cass was home. Not only had he parked behind her car, he had also swung by the hospital to ensure she didnât have a shift that day. Of course, it didnât mean she wasnât out with Lincoln.
He brought his hand back to the steering wheel and clamped it there. Cass and Lincoln had some sort of attraction flaring between them, and Lincoln always got the girl. Always.
So why had he shown up unannounced at Cassâs home? He had news for her, it was true. Still, he could have told her over the phone. His secret motive was to check on her. Last night he had discovered that Lincoln had taken Cass skiing while he was working out how to massage Cassâs environmental suggestions into a formula his father would approve of. After a day of heavy and sometimes heated negotiation, he had returned to the condo to discover that Lincoln had spent the day teaching Cass how to ski.
âCan you believe this, a girl who lives on a mountain and doesnât know how to ski!â Lincolnâs words were aimed at Tag, but his eyes never left Cass.
âLincoln put a picnic together for us,â Cass revealed.
âTo be honest it was more of a liquid lunch. Plenty of champagne with a little Brie and black olives on bread.â
Champagne had always been Lincolnâs go to for seduction. If dessert followed it was always Hersheyâs kisses to go with his own.
